EE1 - First English edition

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: I 1840
Plate number: (W & Co. No. 3098.)
Title: Twenty four Grand Préludes through all Keys
Dedication: His Friend Camille Pleyel

First English edition in which the whole Op. 28 was divided into two fascicules bearing consecutive plate numbers (3098 & 3099), and containing respectively 14 and 10 preludes. EE1 is based on FE2, with some arbitrary revisions – see Prelude in C no. 1. Chopin had no part in preparing the edition.

In the Prelude in F minor the following changes, among others, were introduced by EE1:

  • the horizontal accents were replaced with vertical ones in b. 1; at the same time, the third was overlooked;
  • an inaccurate revision of accidentals was carried out – quite a few overlooked accidentals were not remedied, e.g. in b. 1-4; in turn, e.g. a cautionary  before a2 in b. 1 and a few others were added, not always justified (e.g. in b. 10, 11).

A few errors were also committed:

  • the  restoring f2 in b. 9 was overlooked;
  • in the 2nd half of bar 12, the first L.H. semiquaver is b intsead of a.
