EE1 - First English edition

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: I 1840
Plate number: (W & Co. No. 3099.)
Title: Twenty four Grand Préludes through all Keys
Dedication: His Friend Camille Pleyel

First English edition in which the whole Op. 28 was divided into two fascicules bearing consecutive plate numbers (3098 & 3099), and containing respectively 14 and 10 preludes. EE1 is based on FE2, with some arbitrary revisions, i. a. the fingering added in this and some other preludes – see the Prelude in C no. 1. Chopin had no part in preparing the edition.

In the Prelude in D, the following changes were introduced, among others:

  • the rhythmic values of the irregular groups in b. 4 and 23 were changed from quavers to semiquavers;
  •  lowering c1 to c1 in b. 12 was added (overlooked by Chopin);
  • the R.H. slur in b. 58-59 was prolonged.

The most serious errors committed in EE1 are mistaken key signatures in bars 28-49 – 6 sharps on the upper staff in bars 28-49, and 5 sharps on the lower staff in bars 28-43. Other errors include a superfluous dot extending the  c1 minim in bar 4 or misleading staccato dots in bars 58-59.
