EE - First English edition

Publisher: Wessel & Stapleton
Date: [22 X 1841] 1843
Title: Tarantelle
Dedication: None

Probably the first English edition, Wessel & Stapleton (W & S. No. 5295), London. The English editor of Tarantella registered its publication on October 22, 1841, but the copy of that print run has not been found to date. The displayed copy comes from a later edition of 1843, however, it is with most certainty that the musical text was intact. What makes us believe so is the analysis of Chopin’s works published between 1840-1842 and their extant first print runs and subsequent reprints of the years 1843-45 (e.g. Opp. 37-42 and 45-46). We do not note any differences in their musical texts. EE is based on [FC2] and was not corrected by Chopin.

The title appears in the heading on the first page of the text. On the title page there is a comprehensive title of the series  - Wessel & Co’s Complete Collection of the Compositions of Frederic Chopin for the Piano Forte - with a handwritten number 46 and a list of abbreviated titles of all already published works. There exist a post 1848 printing, in which an invalid address of the editor was removed from the last page.

In EE minor changes in slurring were introduced (e.g. in bars 71-72), accentuation (e.g. in b. 161) and dynamics (e.g in b. 168), also numerous but not always justifiable cautionary signs were added (e.g. in b. 70 and 215).
