Pedalling
b. 351
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
In the main text we give the mark in the middle of the bar, as written by Chopin in FC (it is one of the possible interpretations of the notation of A). In turn, the version of GE may be considered an interpretation of the notation of FC, perhaps accurate, since in FC is close to the next (cf. also the pedalling of FC 4 bars later). category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccuracies in A , Authentic corrections of FC |

b. 355
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
Just like in b. 351, the sources present three versions of the placement of the mark, out of which each one can be regarded as corresponding to Chopin's intention: the marks in A and FC are written with Chopin's hand, while the mark in FE is a possible interpretation of the notation of A. To the main text we adopt the version of A, compliant with the version of b. 351 we adopted. It is worth noticing that Chopin wrote still another pedalling in the repetition of that fragment (b. 452-453 & 456-457). category imprint: Differences between sources |

In the main text we give the pedalling entered by Chopin into FC (→GE) and added by him in the proofreading of FE (→EE). category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Authentic corrections of FE , Authentic corrections of FC |

b. 444-445
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
One can ponder whether the pedal change under these bars corresponds to Chopin's intention: in three previous, analogous places (b. 334-335, 342-343 and 436-437) those bars are performed on one pedal. In A Chopin overlooked pedalling markings in subsequent bars (until the final passage in this section, b. 460-465), which suggests the composer's temporary distraction. Due to the above reason, in the main text we give a two-bar pedal, modelled after the analogous places. Cf. also the commentary to b. 65-116 and analog. category imprint: Differences between sources; Editorial revisions issues: Errors in FE , GE revisions |

b. 448-459
|
composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor
..
We consider the missing pedalling in these bars to be an oversight of Chopin in A: relevant markings were added both in FC (→GE) and FE (→EE), they are also in analogous b. 346-357. Due to the discrepancies in subsequent sources, b. 452-457 are discussed separately. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Authentic corrections of FE , Omitted correction of an analogous place , Authentic corrections of FC |
