Pedalling

b. 676-677

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No markings in A (→FEEE)

One-bar pedalling in FC (→GE1) & GE3

Two-bar pedal in GE2

..

The pedalling added by Chopin in FC (→GE1) in b. 225-226, of which the discussed bars are an exact repetition, is inaccurate, according to us: see the note concerning these bars. A corresponding change was introduced in GE2, yet GE3 returned to the notation of FC.

b. 683-695

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No markings in A (→FEEE)

Pedalling in FC (→GE)

..

In the main text we give the pedalling written by Chopin in FC (→GE) in b. 232-244, of which the discussed bars are a repetition. It is only b. 686-687 that we discuss separately, in which the composer probably overlooked a necessary pedal change.

b. 686-687

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No markings in A (→FEEE)

Two-bar pedalling in FC (→GE1)

One-bar pedalling in GE2 (→GE3)

..

These bars are an exact repetition of b. 235-236, and the Chopinesque pedalling written there in FC (→GE1) is most probably inaccurate. Therefore, in the main text we suggest the markings given by Chopin in analogous b. 103-104. Such a revision was introduced already in GE2 (→GE3).

b. 696

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No pedalling in sources

Pedalling suggested by the editors

..

Chopin began adding pedalling marks in the proofreading of FE (→EE) in b. 697, the first bar that does not belong to the main part of this theme, repeated without changes after b. 197-245, and in the final section identical also to b. 109-113. Therefore, there are no doubts that he regarded the pedalling written for the first time, including in b. 113, as valid also here, in b. 696. We consider the missing pedalling in this and in the next bars in FC (→GE) to be an oversight of the composer, who omitted the entire final fragment of the piece, after the abridged fragment encompassing b. 632-695, while adding indications in the copy.

b. 697-707

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No markings in A (→FCGE)

Pedalling in FE (→EE)

..

In the main text we include the pedalling added by Chopin in the proofreading of FE (→EE). The composer overlooked only b. 699, probably inadvertently, to which we dedicate a separate note.
