Pedalling

b. 179-180

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

 in A (→FE)

No markings in FC (→GE)

   & L.H. slur in EE

   suggested by the editors

..

The missing  mark after , present in A (→FE) in b. 179, could be considered a common inaccuracy resulting from distraction caused by the transition into a new page of the manuscript. However, an identical situation is to be found in A in analogous b. 630; since both places are devoid of pedalling markings in FC (→GE), both  marks were probably added in A after FC had been finished. Therefore, Chopin could have considered the  marks to be clear enough while completing A. On the other hand, the  mark, added – probably by Chopin – in FE (→EE) at the end of b. 631, suggests that the decision was changed (or that the inaccurate notation, perhaps introduced in haste, was completed). Due to the above reason, in the main text we add a  mark also in b. 180. EE performed a far-reaching revision: apart from adding a , the slur placed by Chopin over the parts of both hands was doubled under the bottom stave.

Pedalling in FC (→GE)

In the main text we give the pedalling entered by Chopin into FC (→GE). It is only b. 225-226 that we discuss separately, in which the composer probably wrote a superfluous pedal change.

One-bar pedalling in FC (→GE1) & GE3

Two-bar pedal in GE2

..

In FC (→GE1) Chopin wrote here two one-bar pedals. According to us, it is an oversight of the composer, who wrote one two-bar pedal in analogous b. 93-94, in accordance with the harmonic sense. Due to the above reason, we suggest that version in the main text. Chopin committed such a mistake also in b. 213-214, where the superfluous pedal change was yet noticed and crossed out. A two-bar pedal was introduced in GE2; however, GE3 restored the notation of FC.
A similar situation can be found in b. 676-677.

b. 235-236

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No markings in A (→FEEE)

Two-bar pedalling in FC (→GE1)

One-bar pedalling in GE2 (→GE3)

..

One pedal added by Chopin in these bars in FC (→GE1) is most probably a mistake of the composer. Chopin, being in haste, could have been influenced by previous six bars, in which two-bar pedalling complies with the harmonic content of the L.H. figurations. Therefore, in the main text we suggest two one-bar pedals marked by Chopin in analogous b. 103-104 both in FC (→GE) and FE (→EE). Such a pedalling was also introduced in GE2 (→GE3). A similar situation can be found in b. 686-687.
