Slurs

b. 452-453

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Slur E-B1 in sources

Our suggestion – no slur

..

According to us, the fact of beginning a two-note slur from a note provided with a wedge proves that it is a mistake, hence we omit that slur in the main text; we provide the markings in this bar with a similar form to the one in bars 448-449.

b. 454-455

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

No slur in FE (→GE)

Slur from 2nd beat in EE

Slur from 1st beat suggested by the editors

..

In the main text, we suggest adding a slur after the previous, analogous figure. The absence of the slur could have been influenced by the layout of the majority of the sources, in which the first group of semiquavers in the L.H. is written on the top stave. The slur was added already in EE, but only just from the 2nd beat of the bar.

b. 457-458

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

No slur in sources

Slur suggested by the editors

..

In the main text, we suggest a phrase mark for the L.H., modelled after analogous bars 459-460 and 461-462.

2 slurs in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

Slur in GE3

Slur suggested by the editors

..

In the main text, we introduce a simpler notation, which makes it more balanced at the same time, used by Chopin in analogous situations in bars 459-460 and 461-462. The correctness of the slur in bars 459-460 is confirmed by the proofreading (most probably authentic) of the slurring in this place – the traces visible in FE prove that the shorter f1-g slur was removed. In GE3, removal of the slur over the bar line in the discussed place was an arbitrary decision that did not take into account the phrasing of subsequent, analogous phrases.

b. 460

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Slurs in FE (→EE)

Slurs in GE1 (→GE2)

Slurs in GE3

..

Division of the slur before the 2nd beat of bar 460 must be an inaccuracy of FE (→EE), since wherever analogous passages in the L.H. are encompassed with a slur (bars 452, 456 and 458), it always starts from the first, topmost note of the passage. In GE1 (→GE2), an attempt at proofreading the slurs was probably taken; however, the beginning of the second slur was moved inaccurately, on the 2nd semiquaver. Completely correct slurs, compliant with the natural shape of the figuration, were introduced in GE3
