Slurs

b. 460

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Slur to 8th semiquaver in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

Slur to end of bar in GE3

..

The slur of the majority of the sources must be erroneous – omission of the last group of semiquavers could be attributed to the fact that it was entirely written on the bottom stave.

b. 463-465

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

No slurs in FE (→GE,EE)

Slurs suggested by the editors

..

The ties at the transition between bars 463-464 and 464-465 are placed in the sources on the note head side, which invites to be prudent in their interpretation – in [A], they could have been motivic slurs. The latter do not seem to be necessary here, which is indicated by a comparison with the notation of bars 462-463 and 465-466. On the other hand, ties could have also been intended by Chopin, hence in the main text we add motivic slurs, but we do not remove the ties.

b. 465

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Slur to 8th semiquaver in sources

Slur to end of bar suggested by the editors

..

According to us, leaving the last group of semiquavers without a slur is an inaccuracy – of Chopin in [A] or of the engraver of FE (→GE,EE) – cf. bar 463.

b. 466-468

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Different slurs in FE (→GE1GE2)

Longer slurs in EE

Shorter slurs in GE3

..

In FE, similar motifs in these bars are provided with different slurs, which is a good reason to suspect an inaccuracy. Respective unifying revisions were introduced in EE and GE3. According to us, each of those versions may correspond to Chopin's intention. In the main text, however, we leave the varying slurs, since Chopin used to provide similar motifs with different slurs – cf. e.g. bars 45-47 and 111-114. Considering the entire four-bar section in bars 466-469, we observe that the varied slurs can be considered to be harmonising with the progressive crescendo – in bars 465-466 and 466-467, the slurs end on the first octave of the bar, whereas in bars 468 and 469, the first octave is not encompassed with a slur, which somehow enhances articulation (in bar 469, there is also marcato).
