According to us, Chopin changed the initially written  to  in Atut, probably with an intention of leaving place for a subsequent crescendo. However, the correction turned out to be incomprehensible for the engraver of FE (→GE,EE), who preserved . Like in bar 16, the mark in Atut is written between the chords, which, according to us, does not mean that it should be applied from the 3rd beat of the bar, like it was reproduced in the majority of the editions.

Slur in Atut, contextual interpretation

Slur in FE (→EE)

Slur in GE

..

The range of the slur of Atut is unquestionable, although it reaches neither the first nor the last note of the phrase. However, in FE, the ending of the slur was reproduced incorrectly; in GE, attempts were taken to correct it.

Slur from f2 in Atut & GE3

Slur from b1 in FE (→GE1GE2

Slur from c2 in EE

..

The slur in FE (→GE1GE2) was written carelessly – the beginning of the slur is placed at the pitch of the top voice, but it falls over the 2nd quaver in the bar. We assume the most straightforward interpretation, from the bquaver, to be the text of those editions. The version was revised both in EE and GE3; in the latter, in accordance with Atut

Grace note B1 in GE3

In the main text, we keep the notation of Atut, since the notation of FE (→EE,GE1GE2), musically equal, probably originated by chance. The version with grace note is one of the elements of the complex revision of GE3, which, moreover, included added fingering and pedalling.

Slurs in FE, other interpretation

Like in bars 78-79, the original phrasing of Atut was changed in the proofreading of FE, most probably by Chopin. In this case, however, the result of the proofreading is unclear – the slurs are placed imprecisely; one can have doubts whether Chopin actually wanted the slurs on the 2nd crotchet in bar 82 to interlock. At the same time, the second slur is placed less carefully than the first one, hence a proofreading of the beginning of this slur seems to be more justified than a proofreading of the ending of the previous one. It is this version, analogous with bar 78 and introduced already in GE3, that we adopt in the main text.
