EE2 - Changed impression of EE1

Publisher: Wessel & Co
Date: ca 1856-1859
Plate number: W & Co. No. 1643
Title: Grande polonaise brillante précédée d'un Andante spianato
Dedication: None

The changes described below were most probably introduced in the impression of EE launched ca. 1856-1859. However, none of the copies of this impression has been found, hence in mUltimate Chopin we present its reprint, already endorsed by Wessel's successor, the Ashdown & Parry company, dated ca. 1866.*

A significant number of the changes introduced in EE2, including corrections of some mistakes, was probably drawn from GE1, which is evidenced particularly by the change in b. 125-126, introducing a version that is to be found in GE only:

  • POLONAISE was added in b. 1,
  • e1 was added to a on the penultimate quaver in b. 42 and 186,
  • two flats and a cautionary  were added in b. 59-60 and analog., two flats (one cautionary) in b. 73-74, a cautionary  in b. 114, a  in b. 149, a  and a cautionary  in b. 223-224 and analog.,
  • a demisemiquaver beam was added in the quintuplet in b. 87,
  • in the group of three small notes in b. 125-126, quavers were changed to semiquavers,
  • f was changed to d in b. 128, the E-eoctave to C-c in b. 129, a1 to b1 in b. 130,
  •  was added in b. 172.

In addition, an independent ordering of accidentals was continued, e.g. the superfluous  before b at the end of b. 7 was removed, and analogous places were standardised, e.g.:

  • b2-d3 was changed to b2-e3 in b. 37 – accurate correction of a mistake,
  • the last semiquaver in b. 101 was changed from g3 to f3 – arbitrary revision, probably contrary to Chopin's intention.
