GE1 - First German edition
Publisher: | Breitkopf & Härtel |
Date: | VII-VIII 1836 |
Plate number: | 5709 |
Title: | Grande polonaise brillante précédée d'un Andante spianato |
Dedication: | Madame la Baronne d'Est |
GE1 is based on a proof copy of FE, very close to the final form of that edition (earlier versions occur in bars 142, 200 and 201) – see the characterisation of FE1. Nothing points to Chopin's direct participation in its production. The text of the Stichvorlage was reproduced rather carefully but not flawlessly:
- missing are wedges in b. 41, 43, 83, a staccato dot in b. 121,
- the pedalling in b. 85 was overlooked,
- the tie to G in b. 94 was overlooked,
- the e1 minim in b. 132 has no ledger line,
- d2 instead of b1 in b. 192,
- f1-a1 instead of e1-a1 in lower part in b. 220,
- dots instead of wedges in b. 222 i 242.
GE1 was subject to a revision, typical of the B&H editions, comprising:
- adding the description POLONAISE before b. 1,
- supplementing typical L.H. patterns with slurs, e.g. in b. 19,
- corrections of rhythmical errors in b. 31, 76, 95, 97 (not in b. 151, however),
- adding a sign in b. 46, 125, shifting and adding markings in b. 169-171,
- adding slurs in b. 51-52, 156-157,
- adding an arpeggio sign in b. 54,
- adding accidentals, cautionary ones included, e.g. in b. 73-74, 149-150, 152, 225 and analog.,
- adding a tie to b in b. 94,
- shifting the beginning of slur in b. 101,
- changing quavers for semiquavers in the group of three small notes in b. 125-126,
- correcting a pitch error (f for d) in b. 128,
- removing a cautionary in b. 130, 137,
- adding a staccato dot in b. 137.
In the case of some changes, it is difficult to say whether they were introduced on purpose or whether they resulted from inaccuracies, e.g.:
- extending long accents in b. 31, 132,
- shifting the beginning of slur in b. 94,
- omitting a staccato dot in b. 133.
If GE1 was based on a proof copy of FE with Chopin's corrections, some of the above changes could have been included in this correction, e.g. in b. 94 or 128.
