GE2 - Second German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: (1860-1865)
Plate number: 5709
Title: Grande polonaise brillante précédée d'un Andante spianato
Dedication: Madame la Baronne d'Est

A few years after GE1a* came out, in spite of refreshed printing material, the plates of this impression must have turned inoperable, since the publisher decided to prepare a new edition – GE2. It was based on GE1a, which means that either the publisher was unaware of the mistakes committed therein or that a copy of GE1 was simply no longer available. Consequently, the new edition did not take into account any of the few performance indications overlooked in GE1a

GE2 introduced a number of small corrections ordering the notation:

  • revision of accidentals was performed, much more accurate than in GE1 – accidentals were added in b. 6, 57, 62, 92, 97-100, 124, 155-156, 268,
  • missing  marks were added in b. 27, 54, 216,
  • third slur between b. 78-79 was added,
  • in b. 93 a phrase mark and a tie of d were added,
  • the L.H. slur in b. 95 was extended,
  • a slur and a wedge in b. 153-154 were added.

Not all the introduced corrections may be considered justified, e.g. the beginning of the  hairpin in b. 7-8 was moved or the mark in b. 31 was extended.

The inconsistency of the revisers is particularly striking, since they revised the reprise of the Polonaise more accurately, e.g. they added a  in b. 216, but not in b. 72.

The mistakes committed in GE2:

  • overlooked tie of b1 in b. 32,
  • overlooked  over the 3rd R.H. semiquaver in b. 67,
  • erroneous revision of the inaccurate notation of GE1 in b. 132,
  • overlooked tie of b1 in b. 176,
  •  instead of  before the 13th semiquaver in b. 189.
