b. 74

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

Three-part notation in A (→GEFE)

Two-part notation in EE

..

The notation of EE is most probably a result of having misunderstood the notation of FE, in which the semiquaver beam of the middle voice was placed too high, which can make an impression that they create an incomprehensible whole together with the top beam.

GE (→FEEE) overlooked the dashes determining the range of diminuendo, which was rather a rule than an exception in the Concerto. The doubt about the placement of the rallentando indication, caused by a deletion in A, is of greater importance – it does begin after the 3rd beat of the bar, but also before the last beat. In the editions the first relation was included, yet in the main text we consider the second to be closer to Chopin's intention.

The line indicating the moment of playing the first grace note (together with the bass note) was added – most probably by Chopin – in FED.

In A Chopin wrote the  returning donly before the 19th demisemiquaver. The patent mistake was rectified – perhaps by Chopin – in the proofreading of GE1 (→GE2,FEEE).
