b. 1

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

R.H. slur from minim in A

Slurs from minim in GE & FED

Different slurs in FE

Slurs from crotchet in EE

..

In the main text we include the slur for the L.H. added in a proofreading of GE – cf. an analogous slur in A in bars 91-92 – even though it is not entirely certain whether it was added by Chopin. The undoubtedly erroneously shortened slur in the R.H. in FE made the reviser of EE perform a similar change in the part of the L.H. The mistake of FE was corrected with an entry in FED, performed in pencil.

b. 2-3

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

Two slurs in A

One slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

Both source versions of the slurring of this phrase were written by Chopin in A: two slurs in the discussed place, one in analogous bars 92-93. The slur in GE (→FEEE) was corrected, perhaps by Chopin, however, the change applied not to the correctly rendered slurs of A but to other, erroneous slurring – the traces indicate that the original slur reached the 2nd crotchet in bar 3. Therefore, in the main text we retain the version of A, regarding the version in the editions as an equivalent variant.

b. 6

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

Sixth in A

No sixth in GE (→FEEE)

..

It is difficult to state whether the omission of the minim sixth at the beginning of the bar is a mistake of the engraver or a result of Chopin's proofreading. According to us, the spread chord beginning the solo part constitutes a sufficient sound equivalent for the played chord ending the orchestra's introduction (cf. the compatible version of bar 96), which may be an argument for an intentional removal of this sixth (it cannot be excluded that, even if the engraver omitted this sixth accidentally, Chopin accepted this version). Whereas the chord of the strings in the version with orchestra is only a background for the entrance of the soloist, playing a sixth in the version for one piano diverts attention from the beginning of the solo part to a certain extent.

b. 11-12

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt II

Continuous slur in A (→GE)

Separate slurs in FE (→EE)

..

The separated slurs in FE (→EE) are most probably an inaccuracy repeated after the proof copy of GE1. In the very GE1 (→GE2) the slur was corrected (combined) in the last phase of proofreading, perhaps by Chopin.

No slur in A (→GE1GE2,FEEE1)

Slur b2-b2 in GE1a & EE2 (→EE3)

..

In the 2nd half of the bar GE1 initially included an erroneous slur, running from the bcrotchet to the next bar (most probably instead of the slur written in A, running from b2). Over time, the traces of removal of the erroneous slur became very visible (cf. another copy of GE1), so that it was already in GE1a that the place was reengraved. However, instead of removing the traces of the original slur, it was replaced with a shorter one, reaching to bonly. The slur was added also in EE2 (→EE3).
