R.H. dot in bar 5 in A

No marks in GE1 (→FEEE)

Dots in both hands in GE2

The distinct staccato mark at the beginning of bar 5 in A, and the identical context of motives in the 2nd halves of bars 4-5 allow us to regard the lack of a similar mark in bar 6 as an inaccuracy. Omission of the mark in bar 5 in GE1 (→FEEE) is certainly a result of distraction of the engraver. GE2 corrected the mistake adding a corresponding mark in bar 6. It also supplemented the L.H. part with dots, presumably because of the R.H. part being transferred to the upper staff (in the original layout the marks over the R.H. pertain to the L.H. as well).

b. 5-6

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

1 staccato mark in A

3 dots in GE1

2 dots in FE (→EE)

4 dots in GE2

..

In GE, staccato dots under the C-c octaves were added together with the slurs. In FE (→EE) the one in bar 5 was overlooked, perhaps deliberately, taking into account the lack of a corresponding sign in the part of the R.H. GE2 completed unification of the notation of the pairs of chords in these bars, which, judging on the notation of A, did not fall within Chopin's intention.

b. 6-7

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur to f2 in A (literal reading→GE1FE)

Slur up to e2 in A, contextual interpretation

Slurs in both hands in EE & GE2

..

The slur of A, although unfinished in bar 7 on a new page, clearly leads to the crotchet at the beginning of the bar, which was not reproduced in the editions. The slur of the L.H., added in EE and GE2, is certainly inauthentic.

b. 12

 in A & GE2

No mark in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The missing  hairpin is certainly a mistake of the engraver of GE1, who perhaps omitted the sign, not knowing where to put it (it is practically impossible to convey the notation of A in print). According to us, the following misunderstanding also cannot be excluded: the engraver interpreted the bottom, clearer arm of the hairpin as a slur

b. 12-14

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Dashes up to bar 13 in A & GE2

No dashes in GE1 (→FEEE)

Dashes up to bar 14 suggested by the editors

Omissions of dashes, marking the range of a dynamic (or agogic) change, is a very frequent inaccuracy in first editions of Chopin's works. According to us, Chopin marked the range of the crescendo inaccurately – in A the dashes simply end at the end of the page; such situations would often result in missing endings of such elements of notation as slurs, dynamic hairpins or the very dashes after verbal indications in autographs (and other kinds of sources).
