Tie to f1 in A (→GE)

Slur in FE (→EE)

..

The Chopin manner of writing ties as short curved lines placed close to a second note caused an inaccurate and misleading reproduction of the tie of fby GE1. In FE (→EE) the curved line was given an unambiguous form of a phrase mark, combining the last quaver in bar 31 (b) with the 1st crotchet in bar 32.

b. 38

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur to a1 in A & GE2

Slur from a1 in GE1 (contextual interpretation)

Slur from e1 in FE (→EE)

..

An earlier ending of the slur from the previous bars – clearly contrary to the structure of the phrase – is certainly an inaccuracy of the engraver of GE1 (→FEEE). The beginning of the next slur, in GE1 careless and unclear, was interpreted in FE (→EE) unambiguously, yet certainly erroneously.

b. 39

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur from c2 in A & GE2

Slur from d2 in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

It is uncertain whether the earlier beginning of the slur in GE1 (→FEEE) is a result of Chopin's proofreading (no traces of performed changes suggest that the slur of GE1 was not corrected at all). In spite of this, in the main text we give this version due to a possible Chopin proofreading of the ending of this slur in FE (see the next note), which has to be considered an acceptance of its starting point. The undoubtedly authentic notation of A and GE2 may be regarded as an equal variant. In three out of four appearances of a similar phrase in the solo part (bars 127, 135 and 283), the entire bar is embraced with one slur beginning in the previous bar and ending in the next one, which, according to us, is an argument for adopting a slurring without gaps in the discussed place.

b. 39-40

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

No slur in A (→GE1FEEE)

Slur in GE2

..

The slur for the bottom voice of the R.H. is an arbitrary addition of the reviser of GE2.

b. 43-44

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

1 slur in A

2 slurs in GE1 (→FEEE)

2 slurs in GE2

..

The slurs of the editions, although almost certainly arbitrary (typical whole-bar slurs for the engraver of GE1), do not substantially influence the performance: the break falls between notes at the same pitch (g2) and leading the slur in bar 44 to the end of the bar may be regarded as a slur-tenuto, used by Chopin on a number of occasions.
