b. 21-22

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In A three necessary accidentals are missing: the  raising E to E in bar 21, the  lowering g1 to g1 and the  raising A1 to A1 in bar 22. The first two out of these patent inaccuracies were corrected already in GE1 (→FEEE, →GE2), yet the third only in EE and GE2.

2 slurs in A, probable interpretation

3 slurs in GE1 (→FEEE)

2 slurs in A (possible interpretation) & GE2

Our alternative suggestion

..

The range of the slurs in the L.H. in A is unclear; in the main text we give the most likely interpretation. The slurring of GE1 (→FEEE) is probably a combination of the initial inaccuracy of the engraver of GE1 and the later, perhaps authentic, proofreading of this edition. We suggest a proposal of conciliating this version with the notation of A as an alternative version.

b. 23

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

The first octave in the L.H. in A is a quaver, so that the bar includes only 7 quavers. The mistake was corrected in GE (→FEEE), by replacing the quaver with a crotchet, which we consider an accurate interpretation of the notation of A: Chopin probably erroneously repeated the rhythmic value of the chord in the R.H., as it was in the four previous bars.

b. 23-25

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

2 staccato dots in A

No marks in GE1 (→FEEE)

1 dot in GE2

3 dots suggested by the editors

..

The staccato dots, written in A over the initial chords in bars 24-25, suggest a possible oversight of the sign in analogous bar 23. GE2 included only the dot in bar 24, probably due to the clear staccato sign over the octave in the L.H. The missing dots in the remaining editions are most probably a result of carelessness of the engraver of GE1 (→FEEE).

Staccato mark in A & GE2

No mark in GE1 (→FEEE)

The missing staccato sign is certainly a result of inaccuracy of the engraver of GE1. In the sign written in A one could also see a wedge; however, we assume – as it was done in GE2 – that Chopin meant the same sign in both hands (the dot in the R.H. is beyond any doubt).
