b. 248

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Slur from a in A, FE (→EE) & GE2

Slur from d1 in GE1

..

A later beginning of the slur in GE1 is an evident inaccuracy (the engraver made his work easier by avoiding an atypical slur). A slur compliant with the course of music was introduced both in FE (→EE) and GE2. The correction in FE could have been ordered by Chopin, but it remains uncertain.

b. 248-249

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

Two slurs in A

One slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

Taking into account the erroneous beginning and end of the slur of GE1, it is difficult to assume that Chopin controlled this place. Therefore, in the main text we give the most likely interpretation of the slurs of A – due to the change of the page (from bar 249), the separation of the slurs can be questioned; however, according to us, neither the slur in bar 248 nor the one in bar 249 suggest an intention to combine them.

g2 in A & FE (→EE)

g1 in GE

..

The erroneous pitch of the 2nd semiquaver in GE is a consequence of the imprecise notation of the end of the octave sign embracing the first two semiquavers in this bar in A (and the last four of the previous one). In GE1 the notation was reproduced too literally (erroneously), not taking into account both the graphical context and analogous figures in the next bars. The mistake was not repeated in FE (→EE), although the notation of EE is not entirely clear. In turn, the misunderstanding of Chopin's intention in GE2 is puzzling, in which the erroneous pitch of the discussed note was repeated, although the notation does not include an octave sign.

The clearly erroneous slurs of GE1 (→FEEE) were corrected in GE2 after A.

The sources feature a rather unnecessary  before ein the 2nd half of the bar. In the main text we add a  before e3 – it is not absolutely necessary in the sources due to the use of an octave sign at the beginning of the bar and a different layout.
