b. 148-152

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

In the sources based directly on [A] – GC and FE1 (→FE2FE3,EE1) – four naturals raising c1 to c1, in bars 148-149 and 151-152, are missing. These patent inaccuracies were corrected in GE, FE4 and EE2

Slur over L.H. in GC (→GE)

Unfinished slur in FE

Slur from 2nd beat in EE

Completion of slur in FE suggested by the editors

..

The slur of GC (→GE) includes only this part of the five-bar-long melodic passage whose performance Chopin assigned to the left hand. It is certainly an inaccuracy, perhaps repeated after [A] (the original version?). In turn, a respective slur in FE is broken at the end of the text's line and most probably it was supposed to be led to the end of the phrase (Chopin could have extended it in [A] already after having prepared GC). There is no doubt it is necessary to embrace the entire passage with a slur, if we take into consideration the authentic slurring of analogous phrases. Both possibilities of starting the slur – from the first or second beat of bar 164 – can be considered to be equal.

b. 182

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

..

In GC and FE (→EE1) the  before the top most note is already before the 1st chord. It is hard to say how the mistake, which had to be already in [A], occurred (corrections?). In addition, in the proofreading of FE4, this obviously erroneous version was confirmed, by adding in this chord a  before c1. It is either a mistake of the engraver or a missed revision. In GE the  was moved before the second chord, in accordance with the musical sense and the version of analogous bar 142; similarly in EE2, in which, however, flats before the extreme notes of the 1st chord were added.

d1 in GC (→GE) & FE

d1 in EE

..

The version with d1 (=e1) is probably erroneous – situations in which there is no sign, cancelling the previous alteration, belong to the most frequently encountered inaccuracies of Chopin's notation. Moreover, it is likely that the composer rectified his mistake, while correcting the base text to EE. Adding a cautionary  before c1 is a poorly justified revision of GE2.

Our variant suggestion

The pedalling of GE1 and EE is most probably an inaccurate reproduction of their base texts – GC and FE respectively. The discussion on the versions of the latter – see bars 13-14
