6 different slurs in GC

No slurs in FE

7 shorter slurs in EE

4 longer slurs in GE1

5 longer slurs in GE2

7 longer slurs – our suggestion

..

Both versions of slurring appearing in the sources may be authentic, although it does not seem that Chopin hesitated how to mark these bars. The difference results rather from an inaccurate notation, both in [A] (→GCGE) and in the base text to EE. Settling this kind of doubt can be difficult, even if we dispose of the autograph – cf. the Mazurka in G minor, Op. 24 No. 1, bar 21. In the main text, in all seven bars we give slurs embracing entire bars, in accordance with the notation of GC in the vast majority of the cases (five out of six). The version of EE can be considered to be an alternative, equivalent suggestion (in bars 81-84 it offers a kind of an accent on each strike: strong beat of a bar, beginning of the slur, a written out accent; it should not blur the natural character of this delicately swinging figure).

b. 115

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

f-b-f1 in GC (→GE)

f-b-d1 in FE (→EE)

..

The version of GC (→GE) is almost certainly erroneous, although it may not have been a typical Terzverschreibung error, resulting from the confusing the eye pattern consisting of parallel lines, but rather an erroneous assimilation of various chords – cf., e.g., the 1st mov., bar 221.

b. 117

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

dimin.  in GC (→GE)

No markings in FE1 & GE1

dimin. in bar 118 in FE2 (→FE3FE4)

dim. in bar 118 in EE

..

In the main text, we give dimin. in bar 117 (together with  in bars 118-120), in accordance with GC (and GE2), including more accurate dynamic indications (it is not entirely clear, whether the employed in GC abbreviation is dimin. or dim.; Chopin would use both). Placing the indication in FE2 (→EE,FE3FE4) only in the next bar may be inaccurate. The absence of the indication in FE1 and GE1 is certainly a mistake.

Slurs in GC

Slur in FE

Slur in GE & EE

Slurs suggested by the editors

..

The slurring of the sources raises doubts here. In FE all slurs starting from bar 121 were overlooked. The slur of GC abruptly ends in bar 117, yet the shape of the ending suggests a continuation. Perhaps it made the engraver of GE combine this slur with the next one in bar 121, which cannot be rationally explained. The identical slur in EE is most probably a result of Chopin proofreading of the base text to this edition, however, also in this case one can assume an inaccuracy, as the part which was added in EE (bars 120-123) is linked with the previous slur, yet it does not reach the last note of the current phrase. In the main text we give the most credible elements of the notation of FE (the slur ending in bar 120) and GC (the new slur from bar 121). The continuous slur of EE may be considered to be an alternative solution, perhaps authentic.

c2 tied in GC & FE (→EE)

c2 repeated in GE

..

Chopin manner of writing ties clearly indicates that the ties combined in Chopin's mind with the note being added, which, due to this fact, was not struck. When interpreted in this way, the notation of GC means sustaining c2 through four bars, as each of the •/• signs replaces the c2 minim together with the preceding it tie. The version of GE is, therefore, a result of misunderstanding of GC.
