b. 37-45

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

GE (→FEEE): semiquaver after the 6th L.H. note

Notation in keeping with Chopin's understanding of such figures

..

In bars 37-42 and 44-45 in GE (→FEEE) the semiquaver of the double dotted rhythm in the right hand was moved beyond the third note of the second triplet of the accompaniment. This misleading, inauthentic notation was also used for the double dotted rhythm in bar 49 and in the notation of dotted rhythms throughout the Nocturne - cf. bars 5-13.

See also: the note to bars 29-36 and the chapter devoted to that topic in: Jan Ekier, Introduction to the National Edition, Editorial Issues.

b. 41-45

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

FE (→EE)

..

The dashes and the conjunction ed present in GE and linking sempre più stretto in bar 41 with appassionato in bar 45 are almost certainly in line with Chopin’s notation in [A]. Lack of those elements in FE (→EE), changing to a certain degree the meaning of the entire expression, is probably a mistake.

In FE (→EE1EE2) there is no accent in the word più.

cresc. - - - in GE

cresc. in FE

No indication in EE

..

We give the indication crescendo and the dashes defining its extent according to GE. In FE the dashes are omitted, a typical inaccuracy for this edition, and EE has no indication whatsoever.

b. 41

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

FE (→EE)

..

GE has no before b1. That natural was added during the proofreading of FE, probably by Chopin.

In the editors’ opinion, the missing  in FE (→EE) is the engraver’s oversight.
