Title: Douze Etudes || No. 20
Dedication: Made. la Comtesse d'Agoult

EE1 is based on a lost manuscript, probably a copy of A, reviewed and corrected by Chopin (alternatively, it could have been another autograph or its copy). Nothing indicates a possibility of Chopin correction of EE1, however, differing versions of this edition can be authentic, as a result of authorial corrections in the manuscript used as the basis. An example of such, probably Chopin, addition can be the diminuendo indication in bars 30-31.

On the other hand, EE1 lacks certain elements of notation, present in FE and A (→GE), which may indicate oversights of the engraver or copyist preparing the base text, or omission of this base text at the time of changes and additions introduced by Chopin in Stichvorlage manuscripts. These include, i.a.:

  • some of the staccato dots next to bass notes in bars 1-6;
  • flats returning g2 and d3 in the last triplet in bar 8;
  • cautionary  before g2 in bar 26.

EE1 includes the original, non-corrected version of the 4th quaver in the L.H. in bar 1 and the 1st quaver in the L.H. in bar 19 and a patent error in the fingering in bar 32. Same as in some other sources, a few necessary accidentals are missing, as, e.g., flats returning a2 and e3 in bar 8 or d1 in bar 23.

Certain minor additions were probably introduced by the reviser: accidentals in bar 10 or 32-34. The addition of a  raising c3 to c3 in bar 3 is probably a revision too.
