Dedication: | Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult |
It was a manuscript (lost) that was the basis for FE1, close to A, yet independent from it in many details, e.g., performance indications in bars 1, 19-20, 26-27 or 32-34. According to us, it was most probably a copy of A, corrected and completed by Chopin.
FE1 was certainly corrected by Chopin, which is proved by visible traces of this kind of corrections, which could have been ordered only by the composer, e.g., in this Etude addition of a in bar 19, bottom octaves in bars 25-26 or ties sustaining g2-e3 in bars 26-27. Chopin's intervention can also be suspected in the case of, e.g., fingering in bars 3, 27-29 and 33, which are present only in FE (without including the later impressions of EE copying its solutions).
FE lacks a certain number of necessary accidentals, which almost certainly corresponds to the notation of the base text, e.g., in bars 7-8 or 23. Lack of the raising g to g at the beginning of bar 14 seems to, however, be an error of the engraver. In bar 6 an erroneous note was printed, i.e. e2 instead of d2.
