FE1 - First French edition

Title: Deux Polonaises
Dedication: son ami J. Dessauer

The first French edition based on A. Chopin corrected FE1 in a very detailed manner, introducing numerous changes:

  • harmonic and melodic improvements, e.g., adding a tie sustaining d2 and two notes enriching the polonaise rhythm with a cadenza melodic turn in bars 20-21;
  • notation improvements, e.g., marking the "harmonic legato" by introducing additional crotchet stems in bars 7 and 22-27;
  • added slurring.

For a detailed comparison see the list of the original versions in the characteristics of A.

However, the proofreading was not diligently implemented by Chopin, particularly in the reprise of the D major section in bars 70-85. In a few places non-corrected original versions or their certain elements, being a result of the composer's and/or the engravers' inattention, were left; they include:

  • quaver in the repetition of bar 9 and analog. bar 32
  • no slur in bar 52
  • triads in bar 75
  • ties in bars 77 and 83
  • bass notes in bar 77
  • dyads in the L.H. in bars 82, 83.

Generally, the majority of inaccuracies in the initial bars of the Polonaise result from the editor's arbitrarily writing bars 1-12 for a second time. No conventional repetition sign (as Chopin wrote these bars in A) erroneously indicates their double performance also in the Da capo repetition of this section. In addition, FE1 also includes several dozen other mistakes. Some of them were repeated also in the later impression, FE2, and GE and EE, which were based on it:

  •  in the repetition of bar 9
  • single-voice notation of the third in bar 12
  • no staccato dots in bars16-19, 44, 84-85
  • overlooked or erroneous accidentals in bars 29 and 60
  • overlooked slurs in bars 37, 38
  • erroneous sign of a vertical accent in bars 45 and analog. 77
  • overlooked wedges in bars 51, 53 and analog.
  • overlooked hairpins in bar 61
  • leaving the slur in bar 82
  • overlooked rest in bar 83.
