Slurs

b. 27-28

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Short slur in A

Longer slur in FE (→GE)

Longest slur in EE

..

In A the slur embraces only the last semiquaver in bar 27 and the chord ending the phrase in bar 28. In FE (→GE), probably due to Chopin's proofreading, the slur is over the 2nd half of bar 27. In EE the slur was extended to the beginning of bar 28, which we consider to be the most accurate global interpretation of the composer's intention, including the ideas of the slur of both A and FE.

b. 30

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Slurs in A (→FEGE,EE

Our suggestion

..

In the sources the slur abruptly ends after the 1st beat of the bar. It is an inadvertently left element of the original slurring. In the following part of the bar, as well as in bar 32, there are visible traces of extending and combining the slurs in A.

b. 37-39

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

No slurs in A (→FEGE)

Slurs in EE

..

In EE whole-bar-long slurs over the part of the L.H. were added in bars 37 and 39. Nothing indicates a possible authenticity of this addition, although leaving the figurations in bars 37-40 without slurs must be considered as an inaccuracy of Chopin's notation.

b. 39-40

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Two slurs in A (literal reading)

One slur in A (interpretation) & FE (→GE,EE

..

The slur of A, despite having been written as two lines, was, according to us, accurately interpreted in FE (→GE,EE) as one mark.

b. 41

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Slurs in A (→FEGE)

Slur in EE

..

A (→FEGE) has two slurs in this bar. In the main text we give the undoubtedly legitimate interpretation of EE (one slur). Cf. bar 3.
