Slurs

b. 79-80

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Slur in A, interpretation

Slur in FE (→GE,EE

..

The slur of A is clearly inaccurate – it ends abruptly after the 3rd group of semiquavers in bar 79, yet its final range is unclear. In the main text we give a slur with which in FE the entire figuration in bars 79-80 was included (we interpret the slightly inaccurate beginning of the slur in accordance with the evident musical sense; it was understood the same in GE and EE). The slur probably corresponds to Chopin's entry in a proofreading of FE.

b. 80-81

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Literal reading of slur in A (→FEGE)

Slur in A, possible interpretation, slur in EE

Probable interpretation of slur in A

..

The slur of A runs to the end of bar 80 and this is how it was reproduced in FE (→GE), preserving the ambiguity. According to us, both natural in this context interpretations may correspond to Chopin's intention.

b. 83

composition: Op. 10 No 12, Etude in C minor

Slur in A

No slur in FE (→GE,EE

..

Same as in the case of , one can have serious doubts whether omission of the slur over the pair of chords in FE (→GE,EE) was intended by Chopin. Therefore, in the main text we suggest to consider this mark.
