b. 57

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

Notation in sources

Our alternative suggestion

..

Our alternative notation suggestion is based on the notation Chopin used in similar bar 258 and 262, as it is simpler and easier to read. The original notation of the discussed bar (used in bar 61 as well) resulted in various defects in some first editions – see the note above and in bar 61.

b. 58

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

Chopin entered into A (→GEFE,EE,IE) a cautionary  to e3. However, he did not notice that the respective one is missing before the earlier L.H. chord (to e2) as well as the  restoring g3 in the 2nd half of the bar. The omitted accidentals were added already in GE (→FE,EE,IE).

b. 59

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

..

In the 2nd half of bar 59 in the main text we omit the  to a1 and the  to c3, unnecessarily repeated in A. The latter was already omitted in GE (→FE,EE,IE).
In the 2nd half of bar 60 Chopin entered only one accidental – a  to a2. In the main text we include the flats to e2 (cautionary) and to e3 (necessary following the  in the 1st half) added in GE (→FE,EE,IE).

b. 60-61

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt IV

e2-g2 tied in A

e2-g2 repeated in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

..

The omission of the ties to the top 2 notes of the chord is almost certainly an error by the engraver of GE (→FE,EE,IE).

No slur in A (→GEEE)

g2-f2 slur in FE & IE

..

The g2-f2 slur was arbitrarily added by FE and IE. In the case of FE, a mistake is likely too, as this slur is present there instead of the tie to e2 – see the note below.
