First German edition, based on A. Numerous revisions were performed therein, consisting mainly in adding accidentals and – to a lesser extent – articulation and dynamic markings. Chopin did not participate in the development of GE1 – see the description of this edition in mov. I of the Sonata.
GE1 corrected the vast majority of defects concerning omitted accidentals by adding them both in obvious situations (e.g. in bar 10, 17, 26) and in those more or less problematic (e.g. in bar 27 or 38). Cautionary accidentals were added too, generally justified, e.g. in bar 31. Moreover, accidentals that were unnecessarily entered by Chopin were omitted – repeated within the same bar or unjustified cautionary ones, e.g. in bar 29.
A significant number of changes and additions concern slurs. They cannot be evaluated unambiguously, since A slurs are often inaccurate, and certain revisions were needed, e.g. at the beginning of bar 9 or 15, or recommended, e.g. in bar 6 and 8. However, the other changes and additions in this field seem wrong or unnecessary, e.g. the earlier starting point of the slur in bar 26 or 29.
GE1 also committed a number of mistakes, e.g.:
