b. 573-576

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No marks in FC (→GE)

..

A missing accent at the beginning of each of these 4 bars may be an oversight of Fontana. According to us, it is, however, more likely that Chopin added the accents in A after FC had already been prepared.

b. 573-576

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No marks in FE (→EE)

..

In the main text we give 6 staccato dots, written in A over the 3-crotchet motifs. The absence of the dots in FE (→EE) is probably an oversight; the engraver could have been misled by the placement of the dots in A, i.e. close to the dashes marking the range of calando. In turn, it is unclear how the missing dots in b. 574 and 576 in GE are to be explained, since one can imagine both an oversight and a revision. However, there is no doubt that the doubled marks under the notes are a revision.

b. 574-580

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

in EE & GC (→GE)

No indication in FE

..

In the main text we present the marking cresc. - - - after GC (→GE). In EE it is written out in syllables, which is a characteristic of this edition. in FE there is no marking - Chopin may have written [A2] hastily (cf. annotation to 573).

b. 574-575

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Six-note slur in A (→FCGE1) & EE

No slur in FE

Five-note slur in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The missing slur must be a mistake of the engraver of FE. The slur was added in EE, probably on the basis of analogy with b. 572-573 and 578-579. The shorter slur of GE2 (→GE3) is a result of a unifying revision, to which all similar motifs were subjected.

b. 575-579

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Short accent in EE

Long accents in FE, probable reading of GC

Possible short accents in GC (→GE)

..

In bars 575 and 579 of FE there are long accents, in EE - short (in b. 575 no accent). Accents in GC may be taken as long since they extend over two quavers, or short, as marks of this length most of the time in his manuscript represent short accents (shorter marks actually do not appear there, and long accent marks are undoubtedly and visibly longer). In GE they were interpreted as short ones.
