b. 219

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt I

..

The  raising c2 to c2 at the end of bar appears only in FESch (written in), FE4 and EE2. The absence of this accidental constitutes an undoubted oversight by Chopin in [A] – cf. e2 and not e2 in an analogous passage in bars 91-92.

b. 219

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

e2 in A (→GEFE)

e2 in EE

..

The addition introduced in EE, most probably due to e in the L.H., is, however, certainly erroneous: raising the bottom note in a roulade, independently from the chord being its harmonic background, is rather a rule than an exception.

Dot in A & GE2

Accent in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The cnote is provided with a staccato dot in A; however, it was omitted in GE1 (→FEEE), which is most probably an oversight. In turn, the accent under the note appearing in those editions could have been added by Chopin. However, according to us, in this case it is also a mistake of the engraver that is more likely, since accenting cdiverts attention from the syncopation opening the next two-bar phrase. Therefore, in the main text we leave the notation of A (restored in GE2).

4 dots in A

5 dots in GE (→FEEE)

According to us, the additional dot in GE (→FEEE) is most probably a mistake of the engraver of GE1.

Slurs in A

Slurs in GE1

Slurs in FE (→EE)

Slur in GE2

..

In the main text we give the slurs of A, since the changes of their range and placement are introduced in the editions almost certainly inauthentically:

  • In GE1 one slur embraces almost an entire bar and it was probably meant to combine both Chopin slurs. At the same time, the clearly marked in A ending of the slur on the d3 minim in the next bar was ignored. The slur over the group of grace notes was moved under the notes and it was printed so inaccurately that it practically combines the c2 and fcrotchets.
  • The slurs were then repeated in FE (→EE) with further, minor shifts, also certainly arbitrary.
  • In GE2 the slur under the group of grace notes was removed, whereas the top slur was extended to the next bar (in accordance with A).
