b. 163

composition: Op. 22, Polonaise

No slur in FE (→GE)

Slur in EE

Slur in brackets suggested by the editors

..

Just like in b. 19, in the main text we suggest adding a L.H. slur. It was also added in EE.

b. 163-164

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

No dashes in AI & EE

Dashes in AF (→FE) & GE

..

The missing dashes marking the range of the cresc. from b. 161 are probably an inaccuracy of EE. In AI, until b. 187, there are no performance indications except for the R.H. slurs and 5 accents in b. 173-177.

b. 163

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

a2-g2 in GE

Tied a2 in FE (→EE)

..

As was the case with b. 143, in the main text we include the delayed resolution of the a2 seventh Chopin introduced while proofreading FE (→EE).

b. 163

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

f-a-e1-f1 in AsI, contextual interpretation

f-a-f1 in A (→GE1FE,EE,GE2FESB)

f-a-e1-f1 in GE3

..

The missing e1 note in the last chord of the alternative accompaniment most probably resulted from Chopin's oversight in A – cf. analogous b. 139 and 147 both in the version for one piano and in the orchestral part (e.g. in AsI). The note was added by GE3, and this is the version we give in the main text.
Interestingly, in the solo part of AsI Chopin did not finish writing this chord – he only wrote an f-a third and 3 ledger lines over the stave, which suggests a chord reaching at least g1. Therefore, unfortunately, this notation does not allow us to settle the doubt concerning the potential presence of e1.
