b. 190

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

..

In A there are no naturals raising d to dB1 to B1 and d2 to d2. The first two were added already in GE1 (→FEEE, →GE2), the third one – only in EE.

Our alternative suggestion

..

There are no doubts that the  sign written in A marks also an accent, emphasising the beginning of an enhanced variant of the phrase heard two bars earlier. Therefore, we suggest an alternative interpretation of this sign as a long accent.

Slur in bars 190-191 in A & GE2

Slur in bar 191 in GE1 (→FEEE)

Slur in bars. 190-192 suggested by the editors

..

According to us, ending the slur on the last crotchet in bar 191 is an inaccuracy of the notation of A – cf. the longer slur in the L.H. as well as the slur over a similar phrase in bars 188-190. Starting the slur in GE1 (→FEEE) only from bar 191 is an example of a characteristic manner of the engraver of GE1. See also bars 192-194

e2 in FE (→EE) & GE3

e2 in GE1 (→GE2)

..

The version of GE1 (→GE2) – certainly erroneous, cf. bars 186, 541 and 545 as well as 182 and 537 – probably came into being as a result of an overzealous action of the reviser who added here cautionary naturals before the ggrace notes. The mistake was corrected in GE3

No fingering in FE (→GE)

Fontana's fingering in EE

Fingering written into FED

..

Fontana's fingering is almost certainly identical with the indication in FED, stemming from a lesson with Chopin. In that copy, apart from the evident digit '2,' written twice in a way typical of FED, first by Chopin, then by Madame Dubois, there is a visible delicate line next to the aquaver. The mark could be interpreted as a digit '1,' yet it is uncertain, hence in the main text, we give only the '2' described above.
