b. 168

composition: Op. 50 No. 3, Mazurka in C♯ minor

..

In the main text we add a cautionary  before d. The accidental was also added in EE.
Following the example of GE, we omit the  before a1 at the end of the bar, which was unnecessarily repeated in the remaining sources.

b. 168

composition: Op. 44, Polonaise in F♯ minor

b2-d3 in FE (→EE) & GE

b2, our alternative suggestion

..

The version suggested as an alternative with respect to the version of the sources is a version reconstructed on the basis of an analysis of the corrections performed by Chopin in this place in a draft of a fragment of the middle section of the Polonaisetempo di Mazourka (AImaz). It is also compliant with the second appearance of this phrase – in b. 227. The missing d3 note, although it seems to be a minor difference, changes, however, the course of the melody, and quite significantly. The version of FE (→EE) and GE could have resulted from Chopin not having finished the corrections or from misunderstandings.

No slur in sources

Slur suggested by the editors

..

We suggest the slur in the main text on the basis of the authentic slur in an analogous motif in b. 170 and the respective slurs in the adjacent variations, b. 128 and 200.

b. 168-170

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

No octaves in AsI

Octaves in A (→GEFE,EE,FESB)

..

As in b. 128-131, the fact that the bass line was not doubled an octave lower in AsI may be just a simplified version of notation. In A the doubled line was marked with con 8va, which was elaborated in the editions.
