Issues : No pedal release mark

b. 223

No markings in GE & EE

The pedalling of FE is most probably incomplete, hence in the main text we supplement it after analogous b. 221 (as well as 203). The missing markings in EE most probably resulted from an oversight, as in the two preceding bars.

No pedalling in GE

The absence of the last  sign in FE is most probably an oversight of the engraver of FE (the sign was added in EE). We also regard as an undoubted mistake the total omission of the pedalling in GE (cf. the note on the accent).

Our variant suggestion

..

In the authentic sources, there is no  sign after  in bar 235. It is probably an oversight, quite frequent at the end of a page (bar 236 is the last one on the page in A). The moment of pedal release was specified in EE, which, however, is almost certainly a routine revision. According to us, a different scenario is also possible: the  sign in bar 237 was written in A by mistake, without taking into account the context of the previous bars, based on the same chord. Performing bars 235-237 with one pedal sounds natural and is compatible with the   signs, improving the ascending and descending shape of the figuration in the R.H. Due to this reason, in the main text we leave the inclusion of pedal change at the beginning of bar 237 to the discretion of the performer.

No pedalling in GE3

The missing  mark in this place is to be considered an inaccuracy – in the main text, we add the mark in accordance with analogous bar 587. A  mark is placed in FE (→GE1GE2) under the last quaver in bar 235, which results from lack of space under the low-placed bass note. In EE, the mark was placed in bar 236 over the L.H. part, whereas in GE3, the pedalling was overlooked.

No markings in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The missing  asterisk in A is undoubtedly a mistake – this kind of oversights would happen to Chopin on a number of occasions, and the end of a page always fosters inaccuracies. The total oversight of the second pedal in this bar in GE1 (→FEEE) is also to be considered a mistake – there is no reason to use a different pedalling in the ending of this bar than in three previous analogous bars 234, 236 and 238. GE2 added both a  and a . In this context, the placement of the  sign adopted there is the only reasonable one, hence we give this version in the main text.
