The absence of the  sign in this place is undoubtedly Chopin's oversight, which may have been caused by the transition to a new page (the sign would fall at the end of page of A).

The missing  mark after , present in A (→FE) in b. 179, could be considered a common inaccuracy resulting from distraction caused by the transition into a new page of the manuscript. However, an identical situation is to be found in A in analogous b. 630; since both places are devoid of pedalling markings in FC (→GE), both  marks were probably added in A after FC had been finished. Therefore, Chopin could have considered the  marks to be clear enough while completing A. On the other hand, the  mark, added – probably by Chopin – in FE (→EE) at the end of b. 631, suggests that the decision was changed (or that the inaccurate notation, perhaps introduced in haste, was completed). Due to the above reason, in the main text we add a  mark also in b. 180. EE performed a far-reaching revision: apart from adding a , the slur placed by Chopin over the parts of both hands was doubled under the bottom stave.

The notation without  mark was probably present already in [A], since an analogous place in bars 441-442 is written in the same manner. Therefore, it is a particular case of omission of , used by Chopin at the end of a piece – after all, the solo part ends (temporarily) in bar 198. In this situation, it seems to be natural to hold the pedal to the end of bar 198 like it was indicated in EE and GE3, or a quaver longer, which may be suggested by the notation of the L.H. in bars 442-443. Since the cumulative notation of the solo part and of the piano reduction of the orchestral part causes the authentic notation – without  – to be misleading, in the main text we suggest to add that mark in a way to leave the exact moment of the pedal's release to the discretion of the performer.

Pedalling suggested by the editors

..

in bar 198 is the last sign of pedalling, added and non-deleted by Chopin in GC (in the middle of the next bar one can see a deleted sign, which could have been a  asterisk). It is hard to decide what the reason for stopping the entries could have been, yet the most likely answer seems to be distraction. In any case, it certainly does not mean that one should stop using the pedal. In the main text we add indications on the basis of the authentic pedalling in similar bars 70-80. In GE1 the last written sign was considered to be a mistake and hence omitted, it was however reinstated in GE2

( ), our variant suggestion

..

The absence of pedal markings in this bar does not seem to be a mistake of GE – a typical Chopinesque harmonic pedal is not indispensable here, since all notes that are supposed to be heard are held with fingers. In this situation, the lonely  mark of FE (→EE1) may be interpreted in many different ways, e.g. as a mistake (by the engraver or even by Chopin in the basis for FE or while proofreading FE1) or an inaccuracy (overlooked ). A  mark was added in EE2 (→EE3) by analogy with similar b. 139 and 159, which, considering that the situation in the discussed bar is different, does not have to be an apt revision. Taking into account the above, in the main text we suggest a variant solution, made of the version of GE and the supplemented version of FE.
