FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Maurice Schlesinger
Date: X 1837
Title: Etudes || 5me Étude
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult

It was a manuscript (lost) that was the basis for FE1, close to FC in the most important aspects, yet clearly differing from it in numerous details (e.g., ranges of dynamic hairpins in bars 12-13 and 25-28, moment of pedal's release in bar 27, notation in bar 35, slurs in bars 72-76, rhythm in bar 109). According to us, it was most probably [A], or possibly its second copy, corrected and completed by Chopin.

FE1 was certainly corrected by Chopin, which is proved by visible traces of this kind of corrections, which could have been ordered only by the composer, e.g., in this Etude change of a to f in the 2nd chord in the L.H. in bars 8 and 105 or correction of pedalling in bar 88. One can also assume Chopin interventions in the case of pedalling in bars 57-58101-107 and 108-111, separating the bottom voice in bars 58-60poco ritenuto in bar 97 (this type of markings, absent in FC and EE, could have been added still in the base text to FE).

FE1 does not contain some of the necessary accidentals, which almost certainly corresponds to the notation of the base text, e.g., in bar 92. In the same bar, there is also one of the most serious mistakes, which is the lack of g1 in the penultimate semiquaver. An evident mistake is a g2 instead of f2 in bar 51; an oversight of the engraver can be also supposed in the 2nd chord in bar 111

In some of the fragments, FE1 seems to be less carefully developed, particularly in the scope of dynamic indications, e.g., in bars 70-73 or 130-133.
