FC - Fontana's Copy

Date: ⇒VI 1837
Title: 5me Etude
Dedication: Mme la Csse d'Agoult

A copy performed by Julian Fontana, probably on the basis of [A]. Neat and clear, it was revised, completed and corrected by Chopin. The deletions concern mostly the performance indications; as far as the pitch and rhythm is concerned, one can see erasures, e.g., in bars 30 or 76. It seems to be natural to assume that the erasures are traces of autocorrections of the copyist, yet it does not have to be a rule without exceptions, which is proved by the Etude in A minor, No. 4, for which both the autograph and the copy were preserved.

FC bears traces of Chopin's intense work on the notation of the Etude. Numerous deletions and additions include, i.a.:

  • added dynamic indications, e.g.,  hairpins in bar 15,  in bar 81 or con forza and  in bars 137-138; moreover, some of the indications present only in FC, could have been added by the composer (e.g.,  in bar 29);
  • pitch corrections, e.g., change of E to f in bar 9;
  • added pedalling, e.g., in bars 14-24 or from bar 114;
  • other added indications, e.g., metronome and sostenuto in bar 45.

In spite of detailed revied performed by Chopin, FC includes errors and inaccuracies, e.g.:

  • no arpeggio wavy lines in bar 36;
  • superfluous g2 note in bar 86;
  • absence of some of accidentals (probably repeated after [A]), e.g., in bar 92;
  • an overlooked dot extending the quaver in bar 109;
  • inaccurate slurs, e.g., in bars 122-124.
