FE1 - First French edition

Publisher: Brandus et Cie
Date: XI 1847
Plate number: B. et Cie 4742
Title: 3 Mazurkas
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse Laure Czosnowska

FE1 was based on a lost autograph [A] and was proofread by Chopin. This proofreading most likely had two phases, as indicated by the omission of some corrections from GE1, which was based on the proofs of FE1 prior to these latest changes. Evidence of such a relationship between the two editions is provided by the situations in bar 66, and especially in bar 76, in which the third error visible in GE1 (→GE2) was made by the engraver of FE1 and then corrected in the finished FE1 (others such evidence is also found in Mazurka in F minor No. 2, bar 13 and in C minor No. 3, bar 24). Corrections of the last phase can also be suspected where certain notation elements are missing in GE1, e.g. in bars 14 and 15 or 25.

FE1 contains a number of faults, e.g.:

  • omission of the e1 note in bar 5, which is probably an oversight,
  • placing mordents under the right thirds in bars 5, 7 and analogous, although they certainly refer to the upper notes,
  • semiquaver c1-d1 in bar 7 instead of b-c1,
  • no sharps over mordents in bars 7, 15 and 75,
  • missing tie to f in bars 55-56,
  • omission of the slur in the L.H. in bar 58,
  • omission of the sharps rising d to d in bars 59-60, 62 and 63 and A to A in bar 60, although these are almost certainly Chopin's inaccuracies and not those of the FE editorial team,
  • omission of ties to c1 in bars 61-64,
  • Terzverschreibung in bar 72 – incorrect semiquaver b instead of g,
  • omission of the arpeggio sign in bar 79.

The short, several-quaver slurs in the main theme of the Mazurka are placed inconsistently in FE1, which, compared to the more uniform AI notation, must be considered inaccurate – see bars 3-4, 69-70 and 71-72.

In several places, the text of FE1 is not yet final, as Chopin introduced further changes by correcting FE2 – see the list in the characteristics of this edition.
