GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: XI 1847
Plate number: 7714
Title: Trois Mazourkas
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse Laure Czosnowska

GE1 was based on a proof copy of FE1 containing no latest changes, which therefore are not included in GE1. Nothing indicates that Chopin could have participated in its preparation, however, it bears traces of editorial revision*, e. g.:

  • extended slurs in bars 5-6, 56,
  • added sharps rising d to d in bars 58-60, 62 and 63,

  • ties omitted to g in bars 59-60, and added to c1 in bars 61-63,

  • added tie to in bars 93-94.

The characteristic mannerism of GE1 in Op. 63 is the non-use of slashed grace notes, e.g. in bars 79 and 81.

GE1 contains several errors repeated after FE1 or its proof:

  • c1-d1 instead of b-c1 in bar 7,
  • b instead of g in bar 72,
  • c1-e1 instead of a-c1 in bar 76.

* The revisers were Robert and Clara Schumann – in a letter to Hermann Härtel dated 14 September 1847 Clara writes that "her husband and she looked through Chopin's Mazurkas and found only a few small errors" ([...] mein Mann und ich haben sie [die Chopin'schen Mazurken] durchgesehen, und nur einige Fehler entdeckt [...]).
