composition: Op. 24 No. 3, Mazurka in A♭ major

The initial e1 is not marked in AI with any staccato sign. To A Chopin put a distinct staccato wedge, which was reproduced inaccurately as a dot in GE, and omitted in FE (→EE). category imprint: Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Inaccuracies in GE , Inaccuracies in FE |

The sign begins in A still in bar 10, and ends in bar 11 on the 4th quaver. In GE (→FE→EE) it is shifted entirely into bar 11, encompassing all quavers therein. In AI, the hairpin does not appear in bars 10-11. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GE |

Slurs—and other performance markings—differ in AI from the later A version. In A Chopin wrote down two slurs (no account taken of a slur linked with the triplet—see below) but placed the beginning of the second one in such a way that it may be regarded as he would like to link it to the first. It was thus understood in GE (→FE→EE) which give one slur. Starting a new slur after a pause which stops the flow of music seems more natural. According to the General editorial principles, p. 16, in the main text we omit a slur over the triplet in bar 10. We also supplement a slur ending overlooked in A (→GE→FE→EE) in bar 12 (2a volta). category imprint: Graphic ambiguousness; Differences between sources; Corrections & alterations issues: Inaccurate slurs in A , Triplet slurs |
