Second impression of GE1 in which several dozen mistakes were corrected. Judging by a small number of changes, which are mainly local corrections and not a systematic proofreading (some patent mistakes were left unchanged, e.g. in bar 659), GE2 was most probably released shortly after GE1. Anyway, until 1840, when a monetary reform forced changes of price on the covers, two impressions of GE2 had been prepared (differing in covers only). Therefore, it seems likely that the earliest was released a few years earlier, i.e. around 1834-1837.
The changes introduced in GE2 include:
- addition of a third, demisemiquaver beam in two groups of semiquavers in bar 149,
- change of the e2 crotchet to f
2 at the end of bar 223,
- change – after analogy with similar bars – of d
2 to b1 in bar 290,
- change of the erroneous f
1 to d
1 and addition of an overlooked quaver flag in the chord at the beginning of bar 300. The erroneous last semiquaver in the L.H. in this bar was also corrected,
- correction of the erroneous
to a
before b1, the 8th semiquaver in the L.H. in bar 328,
- correction of a Terzverschreibung mistake (b1 instead of d2) in bar 543.
Apart from the above corrections of generally patent mistakes, GE2 introduced an arbitrary change at the beginning of bar 416 – the authentic e1-b1 fifth was changed to an e1-a1 fourth. That apparently justified revision was repeated in numerous subsequent collective editions, which consolidated it in performance practice for a long time.
Other uncorrected mistakes – bar 483, 484.
There are copies of GE2 differing in covers; the ones with changed prices were published after 1840.
