Slurs

b. 159

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Slur to b2 in sources

Slur to c3 suggested by the editors

..

According to us, leaving the ccrotchet outside of the slurs, even if it is justified by the notation of the autograph, has to be considered an inaccuracy; therefore, in the main text, we suggest a slur modelled after a similar motif in bars 155-156.

b. 160

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

No slur in sources

Slur suggested by the editors

..

We consider the source version, with the slur that does not go beyond bar 159, to be an inaccuracy – see the note on the previous page.

b. 161

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

Slur from c3 in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

Slur from a3 in GE3

..

The slur of FE (→EE,GE1GE2) is clearly inaccurate – it begins in the place where the octave sign ends in these editions. The slur in the autograph most probably encompassed the entire irregular group of semiquavers – Chopin would write this kind of slurs routinely, to a certain extent (cf. e.g. the Concerto in F minor, op. 21, the 2nd mov., bars 26, 28, 30, 31). Therefore, in the main text we suggest such a slur, introduced also in GE3.

b. 174

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

No slurs in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

Slur in first half of bar in GE3

Slurs suggested by the editors

..

According to us, leaving the appoggiatura, ending the phrase, without slur must be considered an inaccuracy. In the main text, we suggest a appropriate slur as well as a slur over two semiquavers, encompassed with a slur in the respective place in the recapitulation (bar 529).

b. 175-176

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

2 slurs in FE (→EE,GE1GE2)

3 slurs in GE3

A comparison of the slurs in analogous bars 175-176 and 530-531 leads to the conclusion that they are most probably inaccurate in both places. Chopin was not utterly careful when it comes to such short slurs over the motifs whose range is clearly defined in another way, in this case by the arrangement of beams, accents and staccato marks. Due to this reason, in the main text we unify all these slurs (we also add the overlooked second slur in bar 176), considering the endings of the slurs in the exposition and the beginnings in the recapitulation to be reliable.
