Slurs

b. 16

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

No slurs in A (→GEFE)

Slurs added in EE

..

In EE, this bar opens a new page. The addition of slurs in the left hand was probably meant to remind the performer about the authentic markings given in bar 1 as a model for the entire Nocturne.

b. 18

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A slur in A

No slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

That slur in A is placed at a certain distance from the notes and obscured with the indication con forza. That is why the engraver of GE could overlook it or even consider it deleted.

b. 19-20

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A slur added by Chopin when proofing FE (→EE)

An earlier version of A (→GE)

b. 19-20

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A phrase mark (slur) in A

A distorted slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

The slur in A is written with a large stroke, but its extent is doubtless. The fact that the engraver of GE interpreted it as covering the whole bar, not a motif, is a glaring example of the manner adopted for manuscript reading in GE (see the characteristics of that edition).

b. 21

composition: Op. 27 No 2, Nocturne in D♭ major

A slur in A

A shorter slur in GE (→FEEE)

..

In GE (→FEEE) the slur erroneously begins from the 2nd note of the motif.
