Morch - Manuscript of the orchestra part

Date: X 1835 – II 1836
Title: Second Concerto
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse Delphine Potocka née de Komar

The parts of the orchestral instruments of ½A are not written by Chopin, hence they had to be copied from an earlier record. According to us, the most likely contender is [SI] – the lost manuscript of the Concerto's score, created probably at the beginning of 1830. The score, as well as the voices prepared on the basis thereof, served for two performances of the Concerto at the National Theatre in Warsaw, in March 1830. It is difficult to say whether [SIwas written entirely by Chopin – it is possible, but it also cannot be excluded that tutti and string accompaniments (all or only some of them) were written by a foreign hand. The issues concerning the reason, aim and creation date of ½A are discussed in the characteristics of A.

Chopin controlled Morch, yet most probably only randomly. A clear proof thereof is a number of additions and corrections written by his hand in the parts of the orchestral instruments, e.g. in bars 247-248 (violin, cello), 255 (timpani), 257 (trumpet, French horn, timpani, trombone). The title page and metronome tempos of particular movements, placed at the top of corresponding pages, are also written by Chopin's hand.

In subsequent years (ca. 1865-1868), ½A was used as the Stichvorlage to the first edition of the Concerto's score and then also at the time of editing GE2.

The attention is drawn by the fact that the fragments of the orchestral part that can be reproduced on the basis of the piano part (above all the so-called Tutti) differ in particular details from the version resulting from the part of the orchestral instruments.

Since the orchestral part of ½A has a marginal role at the time of determining the text of the solo part, we give neither a transcript of Morch (the system presents the text of A) nor a scan, as images of the whole ½A are presented as a scan of the A source.
