GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: V 1840
Title: Sonate || Scherzo
Dedication: None

GE1 is based on GC, however, the text of the basis was reproduced with a significant number of defects, resulting from distraction (oversights), misunderstanding of the manuscript or use of certain engraver conventions (manners). One can mention here:

  • introduction of a  under the bottom stave in bar 1;
  • oversight of the  sign in bar 14 and the  sign in bar 75, as well as all pedalling in bars 259-260;
  • oversight of dynamic signs in bars 117-120;
  • oversight of ties sustaining c2 in bars 118-120;
  • combination of phrase marks in bars 117-121 and 140-141, premature beginning of the slur in bar 128;
  • oversight of performance indications in bar 189.

In GE1 a careful revision of accidentals was performed, detecting the vast majority of the manuscript's defects and adding cautionary signs, e.g., a  before d2 in bar 115 or c1 in bar 142. The signs, added in bar 130 and 131 next to most probably erroneous notes, prove definitely the non-authenticity of the changes introduced in GE1, at least in this regard.

Some of the other mistakes were also corrected, e.g.:

  • a1 to g1 was changed in the chord in bar 52 and 240;
  • ties sustaining the octave in the L.H. in bars 79-80 were added;
  • g was changed to b in bar 108;
  • c1 was added in the last chord in bar 140;
  •  was added in bar 158;

Nothing indicates Chopin's participation in the development of GE1 (cf. the 1st movement of the Sonata).
