FE4 - Fourth impression of FE

Publisher: E. Troupenas et Cie
Date: 1840-1841
Plate number: T. 891
Title: Sonate || Scherzo
Dedication: None

The latest impression, in which creation Chopin certainly participated. Among the introduced changes one can mention:

  • addition of the overlooked B at the end of bar 90;
  • change of c1-g1 to c1-a1 in bar 130;
  • change of the bottom note of the chord on the 2nd beat of bar 131 from f to e;
  • addition of a tie sustaining b1 in bars 198-199;
  • sustention of the chords in the L.H. in bars 273-276.

According to us, Chopin's authorship is unquestionable in the case of the change in bars 273-276, it is also highly likely in bar 130 and 131. The remaining two may have been performed by the reviser, similarly as the most numerous group of changes introduced in FE4, which is constituted by patent additions of accidentals. For example, the signs were added in bars 4, 24, 29-30, 56 and their repetitions, the erroneously placed sign in bar 111 was also corrected. In turn, a  added in bar 182, sanctioning in a way the erroneous  before the top most note of this chord rather impedes the interpretation of the text and is certainly a result of a mistake or misunderstanding at the time of proofreading.

The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin comes from a later reprint of FE4, performed in the 1850s by the Brandus et Cie  company, which purchased rights to a few works by Chopin from Troupenas. The only difference is the addition of the editorial number of the new owner B. et Cie 6475 and information about the printing house F. Benoit, Grav.-Impr in the footer.
