FESch - Scherbatoff Copy

Publisher: E. Troupenas et Cie
Date: (VI 1840-1841/2)
Title: Sonate
Dedication: None

A copy of FE2 from a collection belonging to Chopin's pupil, Marie de Scherbatoff, given to her by the composer with the following dedication "[à] Mademoiselle Marie de Scherbatoff de la part de FChopin, Paris [the date was cut out]". It includes corrections of printing errors, written probably by Chopin, in bar 57, 76128 and 220, as well as a harmonic improvement – change of c to e in bar 59 and 63.

The fact of Chopin's giving a copy of FE2, with a still significant number of faults, occurred probably soon after it had been released, still before the publication of FE3, corrected by the composer in the most accurate manner. One can also assume that lessons with the Sonata, and consequently the entries in the copy, took place relatively soon afterwards, although J. J. Eigeldinger makes an assumption that Miss Scherbatoff was Chopin's pupil still between the years 1841 and 1842 (Chopin vu par ses élèves, Fayard 2006, p. 295).
