EE3 - Revised impression of EE2

Publisher: Wessel & Co.
Date: ca 1858
Title: Douze Etudes || No. 23
Dedication: Mme. la Comtesse d'Agoult

EE3 returned the overlooked in EE2 dedication, placing it above the note text of the 1st page of the Etude in A major, No. 1. Among the changes in the note text, it is the revisions introduced on the basis of comparison with the text of GE1 that prevail:

  • the slur in the L.H. in bar 12 was changed;
  •  returning d1 in bar 16 and e2 in bar 48 were added, as well as a few cautionary accidentals (e.g., in bars 61-62), including the unnecessary  before b2 in bar 52;
  • fingering in bar 21 was added, a fingering numeral in bar 87;
  • a top octave was added to E1 in bar 23;
  • accents in the L.H. in bars 27-28 were added;
  • f instead of f at the end of bar 33 was introduced;
  • c1 in bar 45 was returned;
  • g to the B-b octave in bar 47 was added;
  •  in bar 49 was added;
  • B1 in bar 89 was changed to an erroneous A1.

A few of the listed corrections – in bars 12, 52, 89 – prove a routine approach of the reviser, who introduced the different versions noticed in GE1 without thinking about their aim.

Out of the other changes, one can mention an addition of a wavy line of the arpeggio in bar 81. In spite of the above additions and corrections, some of the mistakes remained unnoticed, e.g., lack of the  returning d3 in bar 39.

The copy presented in mUltimate Chopin comes from a later (ca. 1862) impression, endorsed by Wessel's successor, the Ashdown & Parry company. The changes in relation to the original impression of Wessel (whose copy the editors of mUltimate Chopin did not find) most probably concerned only the details of the cover – above all, the company's name was updated (cf. the cover of the first book of the Etudes).
