Title: Douze Etudes || No. 23
Dedication: Made. la Comtesse d'Agoult

EE1 is based on a lost manuscript – most probably autograph or its copy – which was entirely reviewed and corrected by Chopin, already after having been written. Hence even the versions differing EE1 from the remaining editions may be authentic (e.g.,  in bar 22, single E1 at the beginning of bar 23 or dim. - - in bars 33-34 and 79-80). In other places, in which there are differences between the sources, EE1 is sometimes compatible with FE, e.g., in bar 10 (marcato), 33 (f not f), 47 (lack of g on the 3rd beat) or 83 (a g-goctave), and sometimes with GC, e.g., in bars 23 and 31 (), 25 (dim.), 43 (lack of b1 at the beginning of the bar), 45 (c1) or 92 (lack of marcatissimo). However, nothing indicates a possibility of Chopin proofreading of EE1.

On the other hand, EE1 lacks certain elements of notation, present in FE and GC (→GE), which may indicate an oversight of the engraver or copyist preparing the base text or omission of this base text at the time of introducing changes and additions by Chopin. These are, e.g., accents in bars 17 and 61.

Same as in some other sources, EE1 lacks a few necessary accidentals, as, for example, sharps raising to f  in bar 11 or the  returning d3 in bar 39. Generally, however, the edition is much more accurate than GC and FE in this regard, which is most probably due to the revision – cf., e.g., bars 27-30. A  lowering a2 to a2 in the 1st half of bar 50 also points to a revision of the chromatic notation.

A few serious mistakes, which do not appear in other sources, can be most probably attributed to the engraver of EE1d3 instead of c3 in bar 5 or instead of in the chord in bar 6. In turn, both the  returning d4 in bar 5, as well as the  in this bar were probably overlooked still in the base text. The 1st finger under c1 in the 2nd group of semiquavers in bar 41 is almost certainly a mistake too.
