GE1 - First German edition

Publisher: Breitkopf & Härtel
Date: X 1837
Title: Douze Etudes || 11me Etude
Dedication: Madame la Comtesse d'Agoult

GE1 is based on GC and it generally carefully reproduces the text of the base text. The differences can be mainly explained with an inaccuracy or manner of the engraver, e.g.:

  •  instead of  in bar 1,
  • moved , e.g., in bar 8;
  • conventional interpretation of the placement of beginnings and endings of slurs, e.g., the slur from the beginning of bar 9, 12 or 13-16;
  • change of wedge to a staccato dot at the beginning of bar 12
  • inaccurate reproduction of long accents, e.g., in bar 61 and 67.

The editorial revisions certainly include:

  • addition of the necessary accidentals, e.g., sharps raising f to f in the 2nd half of bar 11 and in bar 48, g1 to g1 in bar 12 and g to g in bar 47,  returning g1 in bar 25e2 in bar 45 or a2 in bar 50, as well as the majority of the overlooked signs in bars 27-30;
  • addition of cautionary signs, e.g., a  before f1 in bar 16;
  • addition of staccato dots at the beginning of bars 20 and 22;
  • addition of the  sign in bar 37
  • correction of the error in the notation of beams in the R.H. in bar 65.

In spite of a quite careful revision of accidentals, not all inaccuracies were detected in GE1 – e.g., lack of the  raising f1 to f1 in the L.H. in bar 29 or the  returning d3 in bar 39. A few mistakes were also committed, e.g., the fingering numeral at the end of bars 26 and 28 was omitted, tie sustaining e in bar 46, the note at the beginning of bar 47,  lowering b3 to b3 in bar 69, slurs of the L.H. in bars 79-81marcatissimo in bar 92, as well as an erroneously reproduced octave sign in bar 95.

GE1 was provided with slightly differing covers, in particular the copies from 1841 and later have a changed price (15 Ngr instead of 12 Gr). From 1841, particular Etudes were published also separately, provided with a collective cover including 12 etudes each by Chopin, Henselt and Thalberg.
